Former Formula 1 world champion Alan Jones has died at the age of 80 following a short illness, bringing an end to the life of one of Australia’s most celebrated motorsport figures.

Jones died on Wednesday, November 5, just three days after celebrating his 80th birthday, according to a statement issued by his wife, Amanda Butler-Davis, through Motorsport Australia on Thursday.

“We are extremely saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Alan, who passed away on November 5 following a short illness,” she said.

The Australian made history in 1980 when he became the first Williams driver to win the Formula 1 world championship, securing the first of the British team’s seven drivers’ titles.

Jones competed in Formula 1 between 1975 and 1986, recording 12 Grand Prix victories from 116 race starts. He began his career with Hesketh before securing his maiden victory with Shadow at the 1977 Austrian Grand Prix.

After joining Williams in 1978, he finished third in the championship in 1979 before dominating the 1980 season, winning five races and finishing ahead of Brazilian rival Nelson Piquet to claim the title.

He became the second Australian to win the championship after Jack Brabham, who secured three titles in 1959, 1960 and 1966.

Jones later returned to Formula 1 with Arrows and Haas before retiring from competitive racing. He subsequently became a respected television commentator and motorsport pundit in Australia.

His wife described him as a passionate competitor whose achievements and distinctive personality left an enduring legacy in motorsport.
