Prospective candidates preparing for the 2027 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have been advised to begin studying early and avoid common errors that could affect their examination performance and admission chances.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) highlighted five major mistakes in a video shared on its official X account on Wednesday. They include late preparation, poor course selection, incorrect subject combinations, failure to follow official announcements and registration errors.
The examination body stressed that addressing these issues early would help candidates prepare effectively and avoid unnecessary admission difficulties.
- Starting Preparation Late
One of the common mistakes among candidates is delaying serious preparation until only a few weeks or months remain before the examination. This often leaves them with insufficient time to cover the syllabus, practice past questions and understand difficult subjects.
Candidates have therefore been encouraged to develop consistent reading habits, create realistic study timetables and begin preparing well ahead of the examination.
- Making Poor Course and Institution Choices
Another mistake is selecting a course or institution without first understanding its admission requirements. Candidates have been advised to identify their preferred courses early, research institutions offering them and confirm the required O’level credits before completing their registration.
- Choosing the Wrong Subject Combination
Selecting an incorrect UTME subject combination could make a candidate ineligible for admission, regardless of the examination score obtained.
JAMB advised candidates to verify the required subjects for their preferred courses through its Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System (IBASS). The platform provides information on approved subject combinations and admission requirements.
- Ignoring Official JAMB Announcements
Failure to follow official updates could cause candidates to miss important information about registration deadlines, examination schedules and other guidelines. Candidates have been encouraged to regularly check JAMB’s official website and verified communication channels for accurate information.
- Providing Incorrect Registration Details
Errors involving names, dates of birth, National Identification Number (NIN) details and telephone numbers could create problems during registration, verification and admission processing. Candidates have been advised to ensure their personal information is accurate and consistent across relevant records before visiting accredited registration centers.
They should also carefully review all details entered during registration before submitting their applications. JAMB emphasized that success in the 2027 UTME requires more than academic preparation, as candidates must also understand admission requirements, make informed choices and follow official examination guidelines. Prospective candidates have therefore been urged to start preparing early rather than waiting until registration begins or the examination approaches.
