Asian stock markets climbed on Monday as investors welcomed signs of progress in US-China discussions on trade and artificial intelligence, while falling oil prices eased concerns about inflation.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 0.88%, South Korea’s Kospi gained 2%, while China’s CSI 300 increased 0.6%. Tokyo’s market was closed for a public holiday.
US and Chinese economic officials held talks ahead of an expected meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week. The discussions included trade, investment and AI, with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent saying both sides had discussed establishing a dedicated US-China AI dialogue.
Oil prices also declined, with Brent crude falling about 2% to $101.80 a barrel as expectations grew that Saudi Arabia could restore part of its disrupted crude shipments.
European markets later followed the positive trend, while lower oil prices helped push government bond yields down.
