The Chinese Community in Lagos has reaffirmed its commitment to improving eye health among vulnerable Nigerians by continuing its free cataract surgery programme, with 29 additional patients undergoing pre operative screening ahead of sight restoring procedures.

According to a report by The Punch, the latest screening exercise took place at The Eye Doctors Clinic, Gbagada, Lagos, under the “Renewed Hope, Rebirth of the Light” Programme, an initiative that has already restored vision to 770 indigent Nigerians since its inception.

The programme offers free cataract surgeries to low income Nigerians who are unable to afford treatment, helping beneficiaries regain their eyesight and improve their quality of life.

Among the latest beneficiaries is 82 year old Alhaji Bashiru Aregbe, who has struggled with cataracts for several years, leaving him with severely impaired vision. He is expected to undergo surgery following the successful completion of his pre operative assessment.

Speaking during the screening exercise, Chairman of the HuaXing Arts Troupe in Nigeria, Dr. Eric Ni, described the initiative as a reflection of the Chinese community’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian service and support for vulnerable people across Nigeria.

He stressed that the programme is driven by compassion rather than social, religious or occupational differences, noting that assistance remains open to everyone in need.

According to him, members of the Chinese expatriate community remain dedicated to providing medical support to Nigerians without discrimination, regardless of their background or location.

Dr. Ni also expressed appreciation to the Consulate General of China in Lagos and members of the overseas Chinese business community for their continuous financial and logistical support, which has sustained the programme over the years.

He described the initiative as a symbol of the enduring friendship between China and Nigeria, adding that the Chinese community remains committed to expanding humanitarian interventions that positively impact the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

He assured beneficiaries that the community would continue supporting public health initiatives aimed at restoring hope and improving access to essential healthcare services.

Organisers said the latest batch of 29 patients undergoing screening represents another step in expanding access to life changing eye care, with more Nigerians expected to benefit from the programme as it continues to grow across the country.
