A coalition of Northern Christian youths has called on religious leaders across the region to prioritize peace, unity, and national cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging them to refrain from partisan political activities.
The group made the appeal in a statement, stressing that clerics play a critical role in fostering harmony and guiding their congregations toward peaceful participation in the democratic process.
According to the youths, religious leaders should use their platforms to promote tolerance, discourage hate speech, and encourage issue-based political engagement rather than endorsing or campaigning for political parties or candidates.
They warned that the increasing politicisation of religious institutions could deepen divisions and undermine efforts to maintain peace before, during, and after the elections.
The coalition also urged political actors to conduct their campaigns responsibly, respect the rule of law, and avoid actions capable of inciting violence or threatening the country’s democratic stability.
Reaffirming their commitment to peaceful coexistence, the youths called on Nigerians, particularly young people, to reject violence and embrace dialogue, mutual respect, and active civic participation as the nation prepares for the 2027 polls.
They expressed confidence that with the cooperation of religious leaders, political stakeholders, security agencies, and citizens, Nigeria can conduct peaceful, credible, and inclusive elections that reflect the will of the people.
