President Bola Tinubu has appointed former Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Magaji Bichi, as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) in Abuja.
The appointment was approved on the recommendation of the current DSS Director General, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, according to a statement issued by the NISS on October 22, 2026.
Bichi’s appointment takes effect from October 22, 2026, for an initial four year term, in accordance with Section 4 of the National Institute for Security Studies (Establishment) Act, 2019.
He succeeds A.A. Gadzama, who previously served as chairman of the institute’s governing board.
Bichi served as Director General of the DSS before handing over leadership of the intelligence agency to Ajayi in August 2024. He began his career in the Security Division of the Kano State Cabinet Office before his transfer of service in 1984.
His appointment brings his experience in intelligence operations, security administration, operational leadership and institutional training to the governance of the NISS, which is based at Lower Usuma Dam, Abuja.
The institute’s governing board plays a role in overseeing its administration and strategic direction as it carries out its security studies and professional training responsibilities.
The appointment comes as Nigeria continues to rely on its security institutions to strengthen intelligence coordination, develop professional capacity and respond to evolving national security challenges.
The announcement was signed by Lilian Omo Odigwe, Director of Coordination and Liaison at the National Institute for Security Studies.
