Security agencies in Plateau State have met with political party leaders and candidates to strengthen preparations for peaceful and credible conduct of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting, held at the Police Officers’ Mess in Jos on Thursday, brought together representatives of the Plateau State Police Command, Department of State Services (DSS), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Nigerian Army, National Orientation Agency and Inter-Party Advisory Council.
Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Faniyan Ayodeji, said the engagement was aimed at building consensus among political stakeholders and preventing violence before, during and after the elections.
He disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police had been briefed on the security situation in the state and approved additional personnel and logistics to address emerging challenges.
Ayodeji noted that certain areas had been identified as potential security flashpoints, stressing that security agencies were intensifying preparations to prevent disruptions to the electoral process.
The Plateau State Director of the DSS, Paul Damian, also emphasised the importance of cooperation among political actors, electoral officials and security agencies in maintaining peace.
The discussions highlighted the need for political parties and their supporters to comply with electoral laws and avoid actions capable of provoking violence or intimidating voters.
Plateau State has experienced security challenges in several communities, making election preparedness an important concern ahead of the 2027 polls.
Early coordination among security agencies, INEC and political parties could help identify potential threats, improve responses to incidents and protect voters’ ability to participate freely in the electoral process.
However, the effectiveness of these preparations will depend on sustained cooperation, timely intelligence sharing and the consistent enforcement of electoral laws.
