The Bida Local Government Council in Niger State has shut down ice cream production facilities over alleged hygiene violations and failure to meet regulatory requirements.

The council took the action after an inspection by its environmental health officials uncovered serious sanitation concerns, including flies in ice cream mixtures, unlabelled products and the absence of required operating licences and National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control registration numbers.

According to a statement issued by the council’s Chief Press Secretary, Aliyu B. Umar, on Thursday, the inspection followed complaints from residents about an ice cream production facility around the Federal Polytechnic Bida area.

The council said the products had no labels indicating their contents or sources, making it difficult to identify the ingredients and trace where they were produced.

It added that laboratory analysis of substances used in production reportedly revealed a lack of nutritional value and the presence of substances considered dangerous to human health.

Production was halted after the managers of the affected facilities reportedly confirmed that they did not possess the required operating licences and NAFDAC registration numbers.

The council also evacuated production equipment and other materials from the facilities as part of the enforcement operation.

According to the statement, vendors reportedly gathered at the facility every morning to purchase ice cream for distribution and sale across Bida, raising concerns about the potential health risks to consumers.

Speaking during the operation, the Supervisory Councillor for Health and Social Welfare, Ahmed Danladi, said the council was committed to ensuring that food and beverages sold to residents were produced under hygienic conditions and in compliance with relevant regulations.

Danladi warned that the council chairman, UM Manko, would take appropriate action against individuals and businesses involved in illegal food and drink production or violations of public health and environmental regulations.

He also urged residents to report suspicious food production and distribution activities to the relevant authorities.

The council’s action underscores the importance of maintaining proper hygiene, securing necessary regulatory approvals and ensuring that food products are safe for public consumption.

Consumers have also been encouraged to remain cautious about food products from unregistered production facilities and report suspected violations to the appropriate authorities.
