Ukrainian soldiers on the eastern front described exhausting conditions and severe shortages of ammunition as Russian forces increased pressure along parts of the battlefield in 2024.
Reuters reporting from Ukraine’s front lines found troops facing repeated drone and artillery attacks, with some soldiers spending weeks in trenches while attempting to repel Russian assaults and strengthen defensive positions.
At the time, Ukrainian military leaders acknowledged that conditions on the eastern front had deteriorated following months of fighting and shortages of personnel and ammunition. Russia had also opened a new offensive around the northeastern Kharkiv region, placing additional pressure on Ukraine’s already stretched forces.
Russian troops had captured Avdiivka in February 2024 and were pressing toward Chasiv Yar, a strategically important town west of Bakhmut. Control of the area could have provided Russia with a potential route toward other Ukrainian-held cities in the Donetsk region.
The situation was further complicated by delays in Western military assistance. Although the United States had approved a $61 billion aid package, Ukrainian forces still faced shortages while supplies were being delivered.
The report highlighted the physical and psychological strain on soldiers fighting along a front line stretching roughly 1,000 kilometres.
