France is preparing a new United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, as disruptions to the strategic waterway continue to affect global energy supplies and commercial shipping.
The initiative is being developed in coordination with the United States following discussions between French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
French diplomats said Paris hopes to circulate a draft resolution soon. The proposed measure would seek to establish an international effort to safeguard commercial shipping through the waterway while avoiding an offensive posture towards Iran.
Previous efforts to secure Security Council backing for action on Hormuz have faced opposition from veto-holding Russia and China, which raised concerns about measures they viewed as biased against Tehran.
France is now seeking a framework that separates maritime security from broader disputes involving Iran and focuses on the shared interest of countries in maintaining freedom of navigation and access to energy supplies.
The development comes as oil prices remain sensitive to disruptions around the Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz is a major global energy corridor, making its security important to international trade and energy markets.
