Patrick Clancy has spoken publicly for the first time since the murder trial of his former wife, Lindsay Clancy, ended in a mistrial, saying he believes he did the best he could while dealing with the circumstances surrounding the deaths of their three children.
Clancy and his new wife, Rachel Danis, are set to appear on 60 Minutes, where they discuss the tragedy, his continuing grief and the intense online speculation that followed the highly publicised trial.
“I think I did the best I could with what I had at the time,” Clancy said in a preview of the interview. “I live with the outcome. I live with it every day.”
Lindsay Clancy was accused of killing the couple’s three children — five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and eight-month-old Callan — at their home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023.
Her defence argued during the trial that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and should not be held criminally responsible for the deaths. The case ended in a mistrial after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous decision.
Eleven jurors reportedly supported the defence position, while one juror maintained that Clancy was criminally responsible. The disagreement prevented the jury from reaching the required verdict.
The mistrial has left open the possibility of a new trial, with prosecutors expected to indicate their next step at a hearing scheduled for September 29.
Patrick Clancy had testified during the trial about his former wife’s deteriorating mental health before the children’s deaths. He described efforts to support her as she sought medical and psychiatric care and spoke about concerns she had expressed in the months before the tragedy.
The case has also generated intense attention online, including conspiracy theories targeting Patrick Clancy. His lawyer has previously threatened legal action over what he described as false and damaging claims about his client.
In the television interview, Clancy discusses the continuing impact of losing his children and says he still talks to them as a way of maintaining a connection.
His new wife, Danis, also addresses the scrutiny surrounding their relationship. The couple married earlier this year after meeting while running in New York.
Danis defended Patrick against the online speculation, describing him as a devoted father and supportive partner and saying she was troubled by the way the story surrounding him had been portrayed on social media.
The interview comes weeks after the conclusion of a trial that attracted widespread attention in the United States because of its combination of a triple-child death case, questions surrounding criminal responsibility and evidence about postpartum psychosis.
The proceedings also renewed discussion about maternal mental health and the difficulties families can face when severe psychiatric symptoms emerge after childbirth.
For Patrick Clancy, however, the case remains deeply personal. More than three years after the deaths of his children, he continues to deal with the loss while waiting to learn whether Lindsay Clancy will face another trial.
