A 16 year old boy has been sentenced to four and a half years in youth detention after stabbing his history teacher in the head at a school in Pembrokeshire, Wales.

The teenager, who was 15 when the attack happened and cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court after a jury found him guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was acquitted of attempted murder.

The attack took place on February 5 at Milford Haven Comprehensive School. The court heard that the boy approached history teacher Vicki Williams and asked her to check his schoolwork.

After entering the classroom, he closed the door before producing a kitchen knife with an approximately 20cm blade and attacking Williams. She suffered a wound to her scalp, scratches to her back and cuts to her hands during the struggle that followed.

Williams managed to take the knife from the teenager, who then fled the school.

Prosecutors told the court that the attack had been carefully planned and that the teenager had deliberately waited until Williams was alone. The prosecution argued that he knew she would not be a physical match for him when he launched the assault.

The teenager had previously admitted possessing a knife on school premises but denied deliberately attacking his teacher. During his trial, he claimed that Williams had noticed the knife in his rucksack and tried to take it from him, saying the assault happened accidentally during the ensuing struggle.

The jury rejected that account and convicted him of wounding with intent. It reached the verdict by a majority of 11 to one after more than four hours of deliberation.

Passing sentence, Judge Paul Thomas KC said it was fortunate that Williams did not suffer more serious or fatal injuries.

The judge said the teenager had taken the knife to school intending to cause significant harm and knew that his actions were wrong. He also warned that courts had a responsibility to protect teachers from violence by pupils.

Williams told the court that she believed she was going to die during the attack. The assault has continued to affect her life, with the teacher suffering symptoms of post traumatic stress and remaining unable to return to teaching.

She said she had become fearful of being alone and had taken additional security measures at her home. She also described feeling nervous around young men and said she did not believe she could return to being the same teacher she was before the attack.

The case has raised wider concerns about violence against teachers in Welsh schools. Judge Thomas noted that it was the second case in south west Wales in two years involving a pupil stabbing teachers or school staff.

In April 2024, another teenager attacked two teachers and a pupil at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Carmarthenshire. She was subsequently sentenced to 15 years’ detention for attempted murder.

Judge Thomas said the possibility of copycat attacks needed to be considered and urged authorities to examine security arrangements designed to protect school staff.

The latest case has therefore renewed questions about how schools can balance open and supportive learning environments with the need to protect teachers from serious violence.

For Williams, the consequences extend far beyond the courtroom. Although the physical injuries have healed, the psychological impact has prevented her from returning to the profession she had built her career around.

The teenager will now spend much of his remaining teenage years in youth detention, following a sentence that the judge said should serve both as punishment and a warning to others considering similar attacks.
