Villarreal coach Iñigo Pérez has criticised Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen following his heated confrontation with defender Santiago Mouriño during Galatasaray’s 2-1 pre-season defeat to the Spanish side on Saturday.

The incident occurred in the 37th minute when Mouriño used his body to impede Osimhen as the Nigerian forward attempted to reach a cross inside the penalty area.

Osimhen reacted angrily, pushing the Uruguay international to the ground before players from both teams intervened to prevent the situation from escalating.

Referee Kadir Sağlam booked both players for their involvement in the confrontation.

Pérez was particularly critical of Osimhen’s reaction after the match, accusing the Galatasaray forward of entering the contest with an overly aggressive approach.

“There is not much to say about football, because the opposing team didn’t come onto the field to play football, but to fight,” Pérez said.

“Osimhen attacked our player out of nowhere and only got a yellow card.”

The confrontation overshadowed an otherwise encouraging individual performance from Osimhen, who had earlier put Galatasaray level after Villarreal took an early lead.

Ayoze Pérez opened the scoring before Osimhen responded in the fifth minute, rising above the Villarreal defence to head home Eren Elmalı’s cross.

However, Georges Mikautadze restored Villarreal’s advantage shortly before half-time, and the Spanish side held on to claim victory.

The defeat ended Galatasaray’s pre-season preparations on a disappointing note, with the Turkish champions recording one win, one draw and three defeats from their five warm-up matches.

Galatasaray had started their preparations with a 5-1 victory over Ümraniyespor before suffering defeats to Monza and Venezia. They also played out a 3-3 draw with Rennes before Saturday’s loss to Villarreal.

The results have reportedly increased frustration among sections of the Galatasaray fan base, with supporters expressing dissatisfaction over the club’s transfer activity ahead of the new campaign.

Despite the disappointing team results, Osimhen remains one of Galatasaray’s key attacking figures as the club prepares to begin the defence of its Turkish Super Lig title.

Galatasaray will open their league campaign on Friday when they host Çorum, with Osimhen expected to spearhead their attack.

The Nigerian forward will now hope to put the Villarreal controversy behind him and focus on helping Galatasaray begin their title defence on a positive note.
