Nigerian startup Ribara Analytica is deploying labour market data and technology to help address the growing gap between the skills acquired by university graduates and those demanded by employers.

The startup, which focuses on labour market intelligence for higher education, has secured the backing of the Mastercard Foundation after being selected as one of 12 early stage companies for the fourth cohort of the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship in Nigeria.

Ribara Analytica uses data on employer requirements to assess the alignment between university curricula and the skills businesses need. It also tracks graduate outcomes after they leave school, providing institutions with evidence that can be used to identify weaknesses in their programmes and improve curriculum design.

The initiative is aimed at addressing a persistent challenge in Nigeria’s labour market, where employers frequently demand practical and specialised skills that many graduates may not possess immediately after completing their studies.

Through its Ribara Talent Bridge platform, the startup also connects graduates with employers. Companies can search for verified graduates, assess candidates using diagnostic skill scores and identify potential employees based on available job opportunities.

The approach is designed to help employers look beyond academic qualifications when assessing potential recruits, while giving graduates a better opportunity to demonstrate their actual capabilities.

For universities, the data could provide a clearer picture of changing labour market requirements and help academic institutions adjust their programmes to reflect developments in technology, industry and business practices.

Ribara Analytica was co founded by Professor Ada Peter, a Harvard University graduate who has held leadership positions at Covenant University. She also chairs the African Higher Education Curriculum Conference, which brings together university leaders and senior professionals from sectors including banking, manufacturing, oil and gas, telecommunications and fintech.

The conference seeks to encourage continuous and evidence based curriculum reforms that can make higher education more responsive to the needs of employers and the wider economy.

The startup’s selection for the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship provides further support for its expansion. Under the 18 month programme, participating companies will receive up to $100,000 in equity free funding, alongside technical support in areas including product development, communications and business strategy.

The fellowship is being implemented by CcHUB in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation and focuses on technology driven solutions addressing education, workforce development, inclusion and access to opportunities.

Ribara Analytica’s intervention comes as Nigeria continues to face concerns over youth unemployment and the transition of graduates from education into productive employment.

A stronger connection between universities and employers could help reduce the mismatch by ensuring that academic programmes respond more directly to changes in the labour market.

The use of real time labour market intelligence could also help institutions identify emerging skills requirements before gaps become widespread, allowing universities to adapt their curricula and prepare students for changing employment opportunities.

For employers, improved information about graduates’ skills could make recruitment more efficient and reduce the cost associated with identifying suitable candidates.

The startup’s approach therefore combines education data, employer demand and graduate outcomes to create a more evidence based system for improving employability.

As Nigeria’s economy becomes increasingly technology driven, initiatives that help universities and businesses respond to changing skills requirements could play an important role in preparing graduates for the future of work.
