The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has identified security risks, localised electoral violence, vote buying, hate speech, disinformation and foreign information manipulation and interference as major challenges that could threaten the credibility of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed this in Abuja while receiving a Pre Election Assessment Mission delegation from the International Republican Institute, IRI.

Amupitan warned that the identified threats could undermine voter confidence and create serious challenges for the electoral process if they are not effectively addressed.

He also stressed the need for stronger measures to protect the integrity of the elections as political activities increase ahead of the polls.

The warning came shortly before the official commencement of campaigns for the 2027 general elections, with INEC and other stakeholders expected to work together to ensure a peaceful, transparent and credible electoral process.
