Political parties and candidates preparing for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections face several legal and political challenges that could shape the race before voters even go to the polls.
Among the major hurdles are ongoing court cases involving political parties, leadership disputes, candidate nominations and challenges to parts of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s election timetable. Some of the cases could determine which parties and candidates are ultimately recognised to participate in the elections.
The situation has raised concerns among political stakeholders, particularly as litigation continues around party structures and the nomination process. The African Democratic Congress and other opposition platforms have also faced legal disputes that could affect their preparations for the 2027 presidential contest.
Candidates must also overcome internal party competition, secure valid nominations and comply with INEC’s electoral requirements. With the presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027, the legal and political battles are expected to intensify as the election draws close.
