The National Information Technology Development Agency has signed memoranda of understanding with two Canadian technology companies, Fireflies AI and Goose FL, as Nigeria intensifies efforts to strengthen its artificial intelligence ecosystem, digital infrastructure and technology workforce.
The agreements were signed in Toronto, Canada, as part of Nigeria’s efforts to establish international partnerships that can connect the country’s growing technology ecosystem with global expertise and emerging digital technologies. NITDA Director General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, witnessed the signing of both agreements.
The agency said the partnerships form part of a broader strategy to build local capacity in artificial intelligence and create stronger links between Nigerian technology stakeholders and international companies.
The agreement with Fireflies AI is expected to support Nigeria’s development of artificial intelligence capabilities and encourage the adoption of AI powered solutions across different sectors of the economy. Fireflies AI develops artificial intelligence tools designed to assist with meetings, transcription, collaboration and productivity.
For Nigeria, partnerships with technology companies operating at the forefront of AI could provide opportunities for knowledge transfer, skills development and exposure to emerging technologies.
The second agreement with Goose FL is focused on strengthening digital and financial inclusion opportunities. The partnership is expected to support the development of solutions capable of expanding access to digital services while contributing to Nigeria’s broader digital economy ambitions.
NITDA said the agreements demonstrate the government’s determination to attract international technology partnerships while ensuring that Nigerians benefit from the rapid development of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.
The partnerships also come as Nigeria seeks to position itself as a major technology hub in Africa. The Federal Government has increasingly placed artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, cybersecurity and technology skills at the centre of its economic development strategy.
NITDA has been leading several initiatives aimed at expanding Nigeria’s digital workforce and improving access to technology. Its Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan includes programmes focused on digital infrastructure, innovation, cybersecurity, skills development and the creation of an inclusive digital economy.
The agency has also been pursuing partnerships with international technology companies to strengthen Nigeria’s digital capabilities. Recent collaborations have included initiatives focused on cybersecurity, cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
The latest agreements could therefore complement ongoing government efforts to develop the infrastructure and human capital required to support a larger digital economy.
Beyond technology adoption, international partnerships could help Nigerian startups and technology professionals gain access to global knowledge, markets and investment opportunities. This could strengthen the country’s ability to develop homegrown digital products capable of competing beyond the domestic market.
However, stakeholders have stressed the importance of ensuring that international technology partnerships translate into tangible local benefits, including skills transfer, employment opportunities, local innovation and stronger digital infrastructure.
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly important to businesses and governments globally, Nigeria faces growing pressure to develop the technical capacity required to participate effectively in the emerging AI economy.
The NITDA agreements with Fireflies AI and Goose FL therefore represent another step in Nigeria’s efforts to deepen international technology cooperation and build a more competitive digital ecosystem.
If effectively implemented, the partnerships could contribute to expanding access to emerging technologies, strengthening local expertise and supporting the government’s ambition of making digital innovation a major driver of Nigeria’s economic growth.
