Multiple districts in Beijing issued heavy rainfall warnings on Friday evening as authorities cautioned residents about the risk of flooding, mudslides and landslides while the country prepares for the arrival of Typhoon Dolphin.

Chinese weather authorities said the typhoon is expected to make landfall along the country’s eastern coast between Sunday and Monday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to several regions.

According to local authorities, Beijing’s Dongcheng, Xicheng, Haidian, Chaoyang, Tongzhou and Pinggu districts all issued heavy rain alerts, warning that hourly rainfall could exceed 50 millimetres.

The highest rainfall was recorded in Miyun district in northeastern Beijing, where precipitation reached 99.5 millimetres on Friday afternoon.

Authorities said more than 2,000 emergency personnel have been deployed across the capital to respond to flooding and assist residents in affected areas.

Officials warned that the intense rainfall could trigger flooding in low lying urban districts as well as mudslides and landslides in agricultural and mountainous regions.

Elsewhere, heavy rains and flooding in Shaanxi province in northwestern China damaged roads, collapsed bridges and disrupted electricity and communications infrastructure on Thursday, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents.

Provinces along China’s eastern and southern coastline have stepped up preparations for Typhoon Dolphin by suspending ferry services, halting construction work and ordering fishing vessels to return to port.

At the same time, large parts of central and eastern China continue to endure an intense heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 38 degrees Celsius in several areas. The latest spell of extreme heat has also spread into northeastern China and contributed to record breaking temperatures on the neighbouring Korean Peninsula.

Authorities urged residents to monitor official weather updates, avoid flood prone areas and take necessary precautions as severe weather conditions continue across much of the country.
