The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a bill aimed at regulating tuition and other charges imposed by private schools, a move designed to promote transparency, protect parents from arbitrary fee increases, and strengthen standards in the state’s education sector.
The legislation provides a legal framework for monitoring how private schools determine and review their fees, while ensuring that any adjustments are made in line with established guidelines and the prevailing economic realities. Lawmakers said the measure seeks to strike a balance between the operational needs of private school proprietors and the financial capacity of parents and guardians.
During deliberations, members of the Assembly noted that the bill would enhance accountability within the private education sector by encouraging schools to adopt fair and transparent fee structures. They also stressed that the law would help prevent excessive or unjustified tuition hikes that place undue financial pressure on families.
The Assembly expressed confidence that the legislation would contribute to improving access to quality education while fostering a more stable and predictable learning environment for students across the state.
Following its passage, the bill is expected to be transmitted to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for assent. Once signed into law, the legislation will provide the legal basis for regulating private school fees and strengthening oversight of private educational institutions in Kano State.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a significant step toward ensuring fairness, affordability, and improved standards in the state’s private education system.
