Despite an estimated 6.3 billion people now using the internet worldwide, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has raised concerns over persistent inequalities in digital access, affordability and connectivity.

The figures highlight significant progress in global internet adoption, but millions of people remain excluded from the digital economy due to limited infrastructure, high internet costs and a lack of digital skills.

The digital divide is particularly evident in rural and underserved communities, where reliable broadband services remain difficult to access. Developing countries also continue to face challenges in expanding affordable and dependable internet connectivity.

Beyond simply connecting people, the ITU stresses the importance of ensuring that individuals can meaningfully participate in the digital world through affordable services, accessible technology and digital literacy.

As governments and technology companies accelerate investments in digital infrastructure, bridging these gaps remains essential to ensuring that the benefits of technological advancement reach everyone.

The growing number of internet users represents major progress, but global connectivity remains incomplete.
