West Ham United have sacked head coach Nuno Espírito Santo with immediate effect following a review of the club’s disappointing start to the EFL Championship season.
The club announced the decision on Tuesday, explaining that a managerial change was necessary to keep its objectives and expectations on track.
“Following a thorough review of the start to the EFL Championship season, the Board of Directors believe that a change is necessary at this time in order to ensure that the Club’s objectives and expectations remain on track,” West Ham said in a statement.
Assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa have also departed alongside Nuno.
The club thanked the three coaches for their hard work and commitment, wishing them success in their future endeavours.
West Ham confirmed that the recruitment process for a new head coach had begun, with former midfielder Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville temporarily overseeing preparations ahead of Tuesday’s Championship fixture against Cardiff City.

The club added that it would make no further comment until a permanent appointment was confirmed.
Nuno was appointed on September 27, 2025, signing a three-year contract after leaving Nottingham Forest.
The Portuguese previously enjoyed considerable success at Wolverhampton Wanderers, guiding the club to the Championship title in 2018 before securing consecutive seventh-place finishes in the Premier League and reaching the Europa League quarter-finals in 2020.
He also led Nottingham Forest to seventh place in the Premier League and the FA Cup semi-finals during the 2024/25 campaign.
West Ham, following their relegation from the Premier League, had prioritised securing an immediate return to the top flight, preferably through automatic promotion.
