The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has assured stakeholders that the Federal Government is making steady progress in the rehabilitation of the country’s eastern ports as part of efforts to enhance maritime operations, improve cargo handling capacity and stimulate economic growth.
The authority said the ongoing rehabilitation programme is aimed at restoring critical port infrastructure, increasing operational efficiency and attracting greater shipping activities to ports located in the eastern corridor.
According to the NPA, the rehabilitation works form part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to modernise Nigeria’s port system, reduce congestion at the Lagos ports and promote balanced utilisation of maritime infrastructure across the country.
The authority noted that improving the condition of the eastern ports would encourage importers, exporters and shipping companies to utilise the facilities, thereby reducing logistics costs and supporting regional economic development.
Stakeholders in the maritime sector have long advocated for the rehabilitation of the eastern ports, citing deteriorating infrastructure, poor channel conditions and limited operational capacity as major challenges affecting port patronage and investment.
The NPA reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with relevant government agencies, terminal operators and private sector partners to ensure the successful completion of the rehabilitation projects. It added that the improvements would enhance cargo evacuation, strengthen supply chain efficiency and boost investor confidence in Nigeria’s maritime industry.
Industry experts believe the rehabilitation of the eastern ports will improve trade facilitation, create employment opportunities and support the Federal Government’s drive to diversify the economy through increased non oil exports and enhanced port competitiveness.
The authority assured port users that efforts are being intensified to deliver world class port infrastructure capable of supporting Nigeria’s growing trade volumes and positioning the country’s maritime sector as a leading hub in West Africa.
