The ongoing development and rehabilitation of rural roads in Benue State are improving farmers’ access to markets and helping to strengthen agricultural activities across the state, an official has said.

The official noted that improved rural road infrastructure is playing an important role in connecting farming communities with major markets, making it easier for farmers to transport their produce and access essential agricultural inputs.

For many farmers in rural areas, poor road networks have long posed challenges to the movement of farm produce, often resulting in delays, increased transportation costs and post-harvest losses.

The ongoing road projects are expected to address some of these challenges by improving connectivity between rural communities and urban centres.

According to the official, better roads will enable farmers to move their harvests to market more efficiently, potentially improving their incomes and encouraging increased agricultural production.

The projects are also expected to support local economic development by facilitating the movement of goods, services and people across farming communities.

The official said the road interventions align with broader efforts to strengthen the agricultural sector and improve livelihoods in rural communities.

Farmers and other agricultural stakeholders have welcomed the development, stressing that reliable road infrastructure is essential for a productive agricultural value chain.

They noted that improved transportation networks could help reduce the cost of moving farm produce, expand farmers’ access to buyers and create opportunities for them to reach markets beyond their immediate communities.

The official further called for sustained investment in rural infrastructure, emphasising that improved road networks would complement other agricultural interventions and contribute to food security and economic growth.

With agriculture serving as a major source of livelihood for many residents of Benue, the rural road projects are expected to play a significant role in strengthening the connection between farmers, markets and consumers across the state.
