Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for stronger international cooperation on the governance of artificial intelligence (AI), urging countries to work together to establish global rules for the rapidly advancing technology while promoting what he described as fair and inclusive development.
Xi made the remarks during a high level conference on artificial intelligence in Beijing, where he said AI should be developed in a way that benefits all nations and should not become a tool for geopolitical rivalry or technological dominance.
Xi stressed that China is committed to expanding international collaboration in AI research, innovation and regulation. He said global standards are needed to ensure the technology is safe, transparent and accessible, particularly for developing countries that risk falling behind in the digital revolution.
The Chinese leader also called for greater cooperation in addressing challenges associated with artificial intelligence, including cybersecurity risks, misinformation, privacy concerns and ethical issues. He warned that without coordinated international oversight, AI could widen global inequalities and create new security threats.
China has invested heavily in artificial intelligence as part of its broader strategy to become a global leader in advanced technologies. The country has introduced a series of regulations governing generative AI and continues to expand investment in AI powered industries, including healthcare, manufacturing, finance and autonomous transportation.
Xi’s remarks come amid increasing competition between China and the United States over artificial intelligence, semiconductor technology and digital infrastructure. While Washington has imposed export restrictions on advanced AI chips to China, Beijing has accelerated domestic innovation and called for a more inclusive international framework for AI governance.
Analysts say Xi’s latest comments reflect China’s efforts to position itself as a key player in shaping global AI policy at a time when governments worldwide are racing to balance technological innovation with security and ethical considerations.
