Sony has reported a significant increase in quarterly profits, supported by strong performance in its entertainment business, while Nintendo has recorded a decline in earnings amid mounting pressure in the global gaming industry.
The Japanese technology and entertainment company reported a 45% increase in operating profit for the July–September 2026 quarter, reaching 622.3 billion yen (approximately $3.95 billion).
The results exceeded market expectations, prompting Sony to raise its full-year operating profit forecast by 9%.
The performance was supported by the success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, alongside contributions from Sony’s gaming, music and semiconductor businesses.
Despite the positive results, Sony’s gaming division continues to face challenges, particularly rising memory chip prices driven partly by growing demand from artificial intelligence companies.
PlayStation 5 sales also declined during the quarter, with Sony selling 2.6 million units compared with 4 million in the same period last year.
Nintendo Faces Earnings Pressure
Meanwhile, Nintendo reported a 16% decline in quarterly operating profit to 73.9 billion yen, falling below analysts’ expectations.
The company faces increasing pressure from higher component costs and a limited pipeline of major game releases for its Switch 2 console.
However, Nintendo maintained its full-year operating profit forecast and retained its target of selling 16.5 million Switch 2 consoles during the financial year.
Contrasting Results in the Gaming Industry
The contrasting financial performances highlight the different challenges facing two of Japan’s biggest entertainment companies.
While Sony continues to benefit from its diversified entertainment portfolio, Nintendo is navigating rising production costs and the need to sustain consumer demand for its latest gaming hardware.
As competition intensifies across gaming, film and digital entertainment, both companies will be under pressure to maintain growth and strengthen their positions in the global market.
