Andy Burnham has been officially confirmed as leader of the United Kingdom’s governing Labour Party, pledging to “restore hope” and deliver a new direction for the country as he prepares to succeed Keir Starmer as prime minister next week.

Burnham was formally endorsed at a special Labour conference after emerging as the sole candidate in the leadership contest following Starmer’s resignation. He is expected to be invited by King Charles III to form a government on Monday, becoming Britain’s seventh prime minister since the 2016 Brexit referendum.

In his first address as party leader, Burnham acknowledged criticism that he had yet to outline detailed policies but insisted, “I have a plan,” promising to move away from “politics as usual” and rebuild public confidence in government. He said his administration would focus on decentralising power away from Westminster, tackling the cost of living crisis, improving public services and driving economic growth across all regions of the UK.

Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, said his experience transforming the region would shape his approach to national leadership. He pledged to strengthen local government, expand affordable housing, improve social care and ensure that economic opportunities are spread more evenly across the country while maintaining Labour’s fiscal discipline.

The leadership transition follows growing dissatisfaction within Labour after poor local election results and internal pressure that led to Starmer’s resignation. Burnham has vowed to unite the party and appeal to voters who have drifted away from Labour, including those increasingly backing Reform UK.

Political analysts say Burnham now faces the challenge of translating his broad vision into concrete policies while reassuring financial markets and maintaining party unity. His first major test will come as he appoints a new cabinet and begins implementing his programme in government.
