The Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) has called on African governments and institutions to embrace data-driven governance as a critical tool for accelerating economic growth, improving public service delivery and advancing sustainable development across the continent.
The corporation said the effective use of data in policymaking has become increasingly important in addressing Africa’s development challenges, particularly in infrastructure planning, investment decisions, healthcare, education and public finance management. It noted that evidence-based governance enables governments to make informed decisions, allocate resources more efficiently and improve development outcomes.
According to the AFC, leveraging data and digital technologies can help African countries strengthen economic planning, enhance transparency and attract greater domestic and foreign investment. Reliable data, the institution said, is essential for identifying growth opportunities, monitoring policy implementation and responding effectively to emerging economic and social challenges.
The organisation also emphasised the growing role of digital transformation in modern governance, urging policymakers to invest in robust data infrastructure, digital public services and institutional capacity. Such investments, it said, would improve government efficiency while supporting innovation and private sector development
