Iran has executed a man convicted of involvement in the nationwide anti government protests that erupted in January, according to the judiciary’s Mizan news agency.
Mohammad Amini Dehaghani was convicted of setting fire to a governor’s office and a police station in Isfahan province during the unrest. Authorities said he also encouraged attacks on security forces, and his death sentence was upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court before being carried out.
Human rights groups have criticized Iran’s handling of protest related cases, raising concerns over the fairness of trials and the use of alleged forced confessions. Iranian authorities maintain that those convicted were responsible for violent acts that threatened national security.
