The Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State has commended Governor Douye Diri’s skills acquisition and youth empowerment programme, describing it as a major contributor to the reduction of crime and insecurity across the state.

The police chief said the initiative has provided many young people with practical vocational skills and sustainable means of livelihood, reducing their vulnerability to criminal activities and social vices. He noted that empowering youths through employment and entrepreneurship remains one of the most effective approaches to addressing the root causes of crime.

Speaking during a public engagement, the commissioner praised the state government’s sustained investment in human capital development, saying the programme has created opportunities for thousands of young people to become self reliant while contributing positively to the state’s economy.

According to him, security agencies have recorded encouraging improvements in public safety, attributing part of the success to the government’s commitment to equipping young people with marketable skills and supporting small businesses. He stressed that crime prevention requires not only effective policing but also social and economic interventions that address unemployment and poverty.

The commissioner urged beneficiaries of the programme to make good use of the opportunities provided by the government by developing their skills and creating legitimate sources of income. He also encouraged other youths to embrace vocational training rather than engage in activities that could jeopardise their future.

Governor Diri’s administration has continued to prioritise youth development through various empowerment initiatives aimed at improving employability, promoting entrepreneurship and stimulating economic growth across Bayelsa State. The programmes have focused on equipping participants with practical knowledge in diverse vocational fields while providing support to help them establish sustainable businesses.

Stakeholders have described the collaboration between government and security agencies as a positive step towards building safer communities, noting that youth empowerment complements law enforcement efforts by tackling the socioeconomic factors that often fuel criminal activities.

The Bayelsa Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the state while working closely with the government, traditional institutions and community leaders to sustain the gains achieved through ongoing crime prevention and youth development initiatives.
