The Federal Government has commissioned power transmission projects in Kano and Katsina states, adding 616 megawatts (MW) of transmission capacity to Nigeria’s national electricity grid.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, inaugurated the projects on October 22 and 23, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure and improve power delivery to industrial, commercial and residential consumers.

In Kano, the projects involved transmission facilities at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi. The upgrades include new transformers and additional transmission capacity intended to ease pressure on existing substations and accommodate rising electricity demand.

The projects are expected to improve bulk electricity supply to industrial areas and surrounding communities. A dedicated feeder at Walalambe will also support electricity supply to Lee Group of Companies, which had operated independently of the national grid for more than 30 years.

In Katsina, the government commissioned two 60-megavolt-ampere transformers at the Kankia Transmission Substation, increasing its installed capacity from 60MVA to 150MVA.

The minister also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for a new transmission substation in Mashi Local Government Area, while inspecting ongoing work on another substation in Katsina.

The investments are intended to strengthen the transmission network, although actual improvements in electricity supply will also depend on power generation and distribution infrastructure.

Reliable electricity transmission is important for households, businesses and industries that depend on consistent power to support daily activities and production.
