The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to allow the establishment of state police in Nigeria. It has also approved a revised supplementary budget of approximately ₦1.21 trillion for the state.

The two bills were passed during Tuesday’s plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Isma’il Falgore, following deliberations by the Committee of the Whole House and consideration at the third reading.

According to reports, lawmakers examined all 26 clauses of the proposed constitutional amendment before approving the state police bill. The proposal is intended to provide a legal framework for state governments to establish and operate their own police services.

However, the Assembly’s approval is part of the wider constitutional amendment process and does not, by itself, mean that state police operations have commenced in Kano.

Meanwhile, lawmakers reduced the supplementary budget proposal submitted by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from ₦1.478 trillion to approximately ₦1.211 trillion.

The adjustment represents a reduction of about ₦266.61 billion from the original proposal. The supplementary appropriation bill provides an updated spending framework for the state’s 2026 budget.

The two decisions address separate governance issues: the proposed restructuring of policing and the allocation of public funds. The next stages of the constitutional amendment process will be important in determining whether states can legally establish their own police services.
