Shares of AI cloud companies fell on Monday after Elon Musk warned that many businesses in the sector could face financial difficulties, consolidation and possible failure.
CoreWeave shares dropped 1.6%, Nebius Group fell 4%, IREN declined 1.5%, while Applied Digital lost 2%.
Musk said many specialised AI cloud providers could struggle to survive as the cost of financing their expansion continues to rise.
These companies provide computing power and data centre infrastructure needed to develop and operate artificial intelligence systems.
Rising Debt Raises Concerns
Many AI cloud companies have borrowed heavily to build data centres and purchase expensive computer chips. However, investors are increasingly questioning whether these businesses can generate enough profit to cover their costs.
Research firm Gartner has warned that 80% of neocloud companies could stop operating independently by 2032 as the industry consolidates.
CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN have also seen their shares fall by more than 30% this month.
Despite the concerns, CoreWeave said it continues to see opportunities to finance its growth, citing its specialised technology.
What This Means for the AI Industry
Although demand for AI computing continues to grow, high borrowing costs and heavy infrastructure spending are putting pressure on providers.
The industry’s future may depend on how effectively companies manage their debt, attract customers and turn growing demand into sustainable profits.
