U.S. President Donald Trump has waived key Russia-related sanctions and tariffs before they could take effect, citing the national interest of the United States.
In an executive order released Friday, October 16, Trump suspended measures under a law signed in September that aimed to increase economic pressure on Moscow over its war in Ukraine.
The legislation would have allowed tariffs of up to 100% on imports from major buyers of Russian oil and gas, as well as countries helping Russia evade sanctions.
The waiver will remain in place until Trump or senior administration officials determine that further action is necessary.
Oil Prices and Political Pressure
The decision comes weeks before U.S. midterm elections, as rising energy costs put pressure on American consumers.
Analysts have warned that the tariffs could push oil prices higher. China and India, major buyers of Russian oil, have also raised concerns, with India warning that the measures could strain relations with Washington.
Lawmakers Criticize Trump
Representative Don Beyer, a Virginia Democrat, accused Trump of undermining efforts to punish Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
Some U.S. senators have also criticized a recent diesel-related agreement involving eased sanctions on Russian exports, arguing that it could help finance Moscow’s war effort.
Russia Welcomes the Waiver
Kirill Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s investment envoy, welcomed the decision, calling it a historic moment. He said the legislation could have effectively halted economic cooperation between the United States and Russia.
The waiver does not permanently remove the proposed measures. Instead, it gives the Trump administration flexibility over their implementation as it balances pressure on Moscow against energy prices and international relations.
