Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has signed into law a bill establishing the Kaduna State College of Post-Basic Nursing Sciences in Rigasa, Igabi Local Government Area, to address shortages of specialist nurses and strengthen healthcare delivery.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, announced the development, describing the institution as part of the state government’s efforts to develop skilled healthcare professionals.
The college is expected to provide advanced training in midwifery, psychiatric and mental health nursing, paediatric nursing, perioperative nursing, emergency care, intensive care, public health nursing, and nursing education and administration.
The legislation also provides for a Governing Council to oversee the institution’s strategic direction and an Academic Board to maintain academic standards and supervise research and professional training. All programmes will be subject to accreditation and regulatory requirements set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and other relevant authorities.
The initiative forms part of the state’s broader healthcare reforms, which include upgrading 255 primary healthcare centres and rehabilitating 16 general hospitals.
Expanding specialist nursing education could help address gaps in the healthcare workforce and improve access to skilled care, particularly in underserved communities. However, the college’s impact will depend on effective implementation, adequate funding, qualified instructors and the availability of suitable training facilities.
