The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has disbursed resettlement loans to 62 trainees in Sokoto State to support their transition into self-employment and help them establish sustainable sources of income.
The initiative is designed to enable beneficiaries to apply skills acquired through vocational training to income-generating activities. Access to start-up funding can help trainees purchase essential tools, obtain materials and begin small businesses.
The programme forms part of the NDE’s broader employment-generation efforts, which seek to reduce unemployment by equipping Nigerians with practical skills and supporting enterprise development.
In states such as Sokoto, where many households depend on informal businesses and small-scale economic activities, targeted support for trained entrepreneurs could create opportunities for beneficiaries to earn a living and contribute to their communities.
However, the long-term success of the intervention will depend on whether the loans are sufficient to meet beneficiaries’ start-up needs, whether recipients receive appropriate business guidance and whether repayment arrangements are manageable.
Monitoring the businesses established by the trainees would also help authorities assess how effectively the programme translates public investment into sustainable employment.
The disbursement represents a step towards supporting self-employment, but its wider impact will ultimately be measured by the number of beneficiaries who establish viable businesses and maintain their livelihoods over time.
