The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) database has not been breached, following the circulation of a viral video alleging that National Identification Number (NIN) records had been compromised.
NIMC described the claim as false and unfounded, saying the video circulating online is a recycled report from 2024 that was previously disclaimed by the commission. It maintained that the National Identity Database has not been breached or compromised.
The commission said it operates multi-layered security systems designed to protect the personal information of registered citizens and legal residents. It urged Nigerians to disregard the circulating material and rely on official NIMC channels for information concerning the national identity system.
NIMC also highlighted its recently introduced NIN Authentication (NINAuth) platform, which provides web, API and mobile verification services. The commission said the system requires explicit consent from NIN holders before their information is shared for Know Your Customer and other verification purposes.
The agency said NINAuth is designed to strengthen privacy and security while allowing identity verification for services including SIM registration, passport processing, tax filings and financial transactions without unnecessary exposure of raw NIN data.
NIMC urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could create unnecessary panic and undermine confidence in Nigeria’s identity management system.
