U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly said the United States does not need Canada, amid continuing trade tensions between the two countries. However, Canada remains an important supplier of minerals and materials used in American defence and industrial production.
Canada supplies the United States with large quantities of aluminum, which is used in aircraft, ships and military equipment. The country also supplies nickel, an important component in steel alloys used for jet engines, armour and naval vessels. Canadian resources also include uranium and other critical minerals relevant to energy and defence supply chains.
The issue has gained significance as Washington seeks to reduce dependence on foreign critical-mineral supplies. In July, the Trump administration said critical minerals were essential to national defence and acknowledged that the United States relies heavily on imports for some of them.
The dispute highlights the deep interdependence between the two North American economies, particularly in energy, minerals, manufacturing and defence supply chains.
