US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to meet in Washington as artificial intelligence, trade, Taiwan and wider global security concerns take centre stage in their latest high-level engagement.
Xi arrived in the United States on Wednesday for a three-day state visit, his first to the country in more than a decade. The meeting comes as Washington and Beijing continue to manage disagreements over technology, export controls and trade.
Artificial intelligence is expected to receive particular attention. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for the two countries to establish a dedicated dialogue on AI safety, while US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has proposed a mechanism for Washington and Beijing to communicate about major AI-related risks.
The discussions come amid growing debate in the United States over how quickly advanced AI should be developed. Two Democratic lawmakers are expected to introduce legislation that would pause development of advanced artificial superintelligence until safeguards are established and create a federal agency to oversee the technology.
Beyond AI, Trump and Xi are expected to address trade relations, Taiwan and other areas of strategic competition. Their discussions could influence relations between the world’s two largest economies at a time when businesses and markets remain sensitive to US-China policy changes.
