A new survey has highlighted a significant difference between college-educated Democrats and working-class voters over the issues they consider important in protecting democracy.
According to an analysis published by The Guardian, resisting authoritarianism ranks highly among college-educated Democratic voters but was ranked 19th out of 20 priorities among working-class voters.
The analysis by Jared Abbott and Joan C. Williams said reducing government corruption was a much higher priority among working-class voters across racial groups.
The authors argued that Democrats could connect their defence of democratic institutions to everyday concerns such as rising prices, wages, healthcare and economic opportunity by focusing more on corruption and perceived unfairness in government.
They cited Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff’s messaging on political corruption as an example of linking government accountability to issues affecting ordinary Americans.
