Germany and the Netherlands are launching a €40 million ($47 million) programme to accelerate the design of artificial intelligence chips, as Europe seeks to strengthen its semiconductor industry and reduce reliance on foreign technology.

Germany’s Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation (SPRIND) and the Netherlands’ National Agency for Disruptive Innovation (NADI) will run the 20-month programme, with small teams using AI to develop faster and more efficient chips for AI training and inference.

The partnership combines Germany’s research and industrial capabilities with the Netherlands’ strong semiconductor ecosystem, which includes major chip-equipment maker ASML. NADI, launched this month, has received €500 million in funding from the Dutch government.

The initiative aims to shorten the chip-design process, which can take years, while helping Europe develop more advanced AI hardware and strengthen its position in the global semiconductor industry.
