Georgescu’s home was searched on Monday and he was taken in for questioning as part of an investigation into alleged fraud and the formation of an organised crime group. Prosecutors allege that Georgescu and two other suspects persuaded a Romanian businessman to provide €1.1 million by claiming they could secure a credit line of up to €15 million from a foreign financial institution.
Georgescu has denied wrongdoing in his other legal cases and declined to comment on the latest allegations while being taken for questioning.
The development adds to the former candidate’s existing legal difficulties. He is already facing separate proceedings linked to allegations of attempting to undermine national security following the annulment of the 2024 election and promoting Romania’s 1930s fascist leaders, which is prohibited under Romanian law.
Romania’s 2024 presidential election was annulled after authorities cited suspected Russian interference. Moscow has denied involvement. A rerun held in May 2025 was won by pro-European centrist Nicușor Dan.
