Illinois authorities are investigating an incident in Evanston after a U.S. citizen was detained by federal agents and later taken to a hospital with injuries to his head, neck and teeth.
Evanston police said officers responded on Sunday morning to a report of an argument and found the man on the ground being assisted by several people. Witnesses told police that people they believed were Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE, agents had attempted to detain him.
A federal agent told police that agents were searching for a fugitive and had detained the man after he allegedly refused to provide identification and resisted fingerprinting. The agents later determined that he was not the person they were seeking and discovered that he was a U.S. citizen, after which he was released.
Police said an officer noticed blood on the agent’s hands. The agent claimed he was injured while attempting to handcuff the man. Authorities later documented the citizen’s injuries at a hospital.
The Evanston Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing, with officers reviewing available video and preserving evidence. The Department of Homeland Security has not immediately commented on the incident.
