CNN, MS NOW and Politico have filed a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump and his administration after their journalists were barred from the White House and their press credentials revoked.
The three news organisations announced on Monday that they were seeking legal protection under the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which guarantees freedom of the press.
The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, seeks an emergency hearing and a temporary restraining order to restore their access to the White House.
The media organisations accused the administration of restricting their access because of dissatisfaction with their reporting. They argued that the government should not determine what the press reports or publishes.
Trump defended the ban, accusing the outlets of spreading what he described as fake news and claiming they posed a national security threat, without providing evidence to support the claim.
The dispute has drawn criticism from press freedom organisations and renewed debate over government access to journalists and constitutional protections for independent media.
