UK Urged to Expand National Wealth Fund to Support Economic Growth

A coalition of unions, charities and thinktanks is urging the UK government to strengthen the National Wealth Fund and give it greater financial independence.

The groups say a larger fund could finance infrastructure, support industries, lower energy costs and create jobs, particularly in struggling regions. The fund currently has £5.5bn available annually, while Germany’s KfW lent €62bn in 2025.

They argue stronger public investment could help unlock private-sector funding and boost long-term economic growth.
