The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has prevented a possible tanker explosion after a trailer carrying 45,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) veered off the road and crashed into a ditch along New Moniya Road in Ibadan.
The incident occurred after the tanker, identified as a red FONTO trailer with Lagos registration number FKJ 843 XL, reportedly developed a braking system failure while travelling along the road. The vehicle subsequently swerved off the road and ended up in a ditch.
Firefighters were alerted to the incident through a distress call from a resident and quickly mobilised to the scene. On arrival, they found the tanker carrying the large quantity of petroleum product, creating a potentially dangerous situation for nearby residents and road users.
The emergency crew immediately deployed chemical foam to cover the spilled petroleum product and suppress the risk of ignition. The operation successfully brought the situation under control, preventing what could have developed into a major explosion or fire.
No death or injury was recorded in the incident.
Personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Amotekun Corps also supported the operation by securing the area, managing movement around the scene and assisting the firefighters.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency and Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Service Reform, Maroof Akinwande, urged motorists to take vehicle maintenance seriously, particularly operators of heavy-duty and petroleum-carrying vehicles.
He also advised road users to obey traffic regulations and exercise caution when transporting hazardous materials.
The incident once again highlights the danger posed by tanker accidents, particularly when large quantities of highly flammable petroleum products are involved. A relatively minor road accident can quickly become a major emergency if spilled fuel comes into contact with fire, sparks or other ignition sources.
The successful intervention also underscored the importance of rapid emergency response, as firefighters were able to contain the danger before it resulted in casualties or widespread damage.
Authorities continue to encourage motorists and businesses to maintain appropriate fire-safety equipment and ensure that vehicles operating on public roads are regularly inspected and kept in safe working condition.
