The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Bauchi State has received 9,969 human rights complaints between January and October 2026, with 6,664 cases still pending. The commission’s State Coordinator, Mrs Yachit Dala, disclosed this in an interview in Bauchi on Wednesday. She said the commission had successfully resolved 3,305 cases within the period, while the remaining complaints were still being addressed.
According to Dala, the reported cases involved gender-based violence, rape, sexual and domestic violence, mistreatment, neglect of parental responsibilities, as well as violations of civil and political rights. She explained that complaints received by the commission were assessed and registered to facilitate their resolution.
Dala added that the NHRC investigates allegations of human rights violations and can establish special panels or tribunals to hear petitions and examine testimonies. She said the commission also provides support to victims and makes recommendations aimed at resolving complaints amicably. The coordinator identified inadequate funding, limited public awareness and illiteracy as some of the major challenges affecting the commission’s operations. She encouraged members of the public to report cases of abuse and urged youth and women’s organizations to support efforts to prevent human rights violations.
