The Consulate-General of Nigeria in Johannesburg has issued a safety advisory to Nigerians living in and around Ekurhuleni, following the deaths of eight women whose cases are currently being investigated by South African authorities.
According to the consulate, the deaths occurred over a period of about two months in areas including Kempton Park and Rhodesfield, east of Johannesburg. A multidisciplinary investigation team has been deployed to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The consulate said investigators had identified concerning similarities in some of the cases and were examining whether the incidents could be connected. However, it stressed that South African police have not established that a single person was responsible or confirmed reports of a serial killer.
Nigerian women and girls living, working, studying or regularly travelling through the affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant and take reasonable safety precautions.
The consulate advised residents to avoid walking, jogging or exercising alone in isolated, poorly lit or unfamiliar areas and encouraged people to travel or exercise in groups where possible. It also urged Nigerians to inform trusted family members or friends of their destinations and expected return times.
The mission cautioned against sharing unverified names, photographs, videos or allegations about suspected perpetrators, warning that such information could interfere with ongoing investigations and harm innocent people.
The consulate said it would continue to monitor the situation and work with South African authorities as investigations continue.
