The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has strengthened the capacity of the Adamawa State Polytechnic Skills Development Centre in Yola with the installation of a 300KVA solar power system and 10 inverter split air conditioners.

The intervention, presented on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at the Centre along Army Barracks Road, Malkohi, is aimed at improving the learning environment and supporting entrepreneurial and vocational skills development.

Representatives of UNHCR, Mr. Runnie and Miss Agatha, said the donation was prompted by the quality of skills training programmes being offered by the Centre. They noted that the support was the beginning of a broader partnership, with further interventions expected.

The organisation is also preparing to sponsor 500 trainees, particularly persons drawn from Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps across Adamawa State, for entrepreneurial skills training at the Centre.

Receiving the delegation, the Acting Rector of Adamawa State Polytechnic, Dr. Harrison Edan Mbasumai, appreciated UNHCR for the intervention and expressed the institution’s readiness to collaborate with the organisation in promoting human development and sustainable livelihoods.

The Director of the Skills Development Centre, Dr. Suleiman Samaila, also commended the initiative and confirmed the Centre’s readiness to train the 500 beneficiaries. He disclosed that the programme would be implemented in two phases, with 300 trainees in the first cohort and 200 in the second.

The Centre confirmed that the donated solar power system and air conditioners have been fully installed and commissioned, providing improved facilities for effective skills acquisition and entrepreneurship training.
