OpenAI is working with rival artificial intelligence companies Anthropic and Google DeepMind on efforts to address growing concerns over AI safety, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday.
OpenAI’s global policy chief, Chris Lehane, said the companies have been discussing safety issues for several weeks. He said the firms do not believe an antitrust waiver is necessary to coordinate on AI safety matters.
The discussions come as concerns about the potential risks of advanced AI systems intensify. Leaders of several major U.S. AI companies have recently called for greater caution over the pace of development and stronger safeguards.
Lehane also said OpenAI would support bipartisan U.S. legislation aimed at mitigating catastrophic risks associated with AI. The company, Anthropic and Alphabet, Google’s parent company, did not immediately comment on the report, and Reuters said it could not independently verify Bloomberg’s account.
