The unusual alliance between the progressive senator and former Trump adviser comes as public anxiety over AI continues to rise. Concerns range from potential job losses and higher electricity costs linked to data centers to the longer-term risks posed by increasingly powerful AI systems.
Sanders has called for a moratorium on AI tools that could disrupt government operations until stronger federal oversight is established. Bannon, meanwhile, has criticized the lack of meaningful federal safeguards and opposed efforts to prevent states from imposing their own AI regulations.
Their appearance reflects a widening debate in the United States over how quickly AI should advance and how much government oversight is needed. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 77% of Americans were concerned that AI data centers could contribute to higher electricity prices.
The push for greater restrictions comes as technology companies and AI researchers also raise concerns about the risks associated with increasingly capable systems, intensifying pressure on Washington to establish clearer safety rules.
